The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science is seeking a Research Associate 1 for NIH-sponsored laboratory that raises the biomedical important animal Aplysia California. This unique aquaculture laboratory raises Aplysia californica , a mollusk widely used as a model organism in biomedical research and supplies these animals to researchers both nationally and internationally. The ideal candidate will be motivated, capable of working both independently and in small teams, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining a strong work ethic.

Job Description- Research Associate 1

Research Associate will be required to:

• Manage the larval production and egg output from reproductive colonies of the California sea hare, Aplysia californica, at the UM /NIH National Aplysia Resource. This task requires an in-depth knowledge of biology, mariculture and invertebrate larval culture techniques.
• Collect Aplysia eggs and assess development of eggs to determine suitability for culture.
• Setup and maintain Aplysia larval cultures weekly, following all established culture protocols.
  • Includes weekly larval transfers, determining health of and measuring larvae, feeding larvae.
  • Collection and management of larval culture data
• Metamorphosis of competent larvae.
• Care of early post-metamorphic Aplysia.
• Maintain clean microalgae culture and stocks, including stock transfers and grow out.
• Maintain a clean laboratory environment, including cleaning glassware, counters, acid baths, etc.
• Assist in all other aspects of the National Aplysia Resource as needed.
• Research Associate 1 will be expected to show creativity and latitude in developing and performing research tasks under the direct supervision of the Resource Manager, including.
• Oversee broodstock mating program to insure the continuous availability of eggs for larval culture.
• Insure the implementation of all biosecurity and safety protocols.
• Give tours of the National Aplysia Resource to student groups and VIP groups when needed in fulfillment of the NIH outreach requirement.
• Successful candidate will be required to work holidays and weekends as needed.
• Will be classified as an Essential Employee and will be required to be available before and immediately after major storms.

Required Knowledge and Skills

• Education- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, biology, or a related field.
• Aquaculture experience required.
• Experience in invertebrate larval culture, especially mollusks, is a plus.
• Working knowledge of seawater aquaculture systems, including maintenance and repairs when needed.
• Ability to work closely with researchers, both at UM and externally.
• Record keeping, data analysis, scientific writing.
• Must be able to lift 40 pounds and work outdoors and in difficult conditions.
• Attention to detail is a must.
