The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is currently accepting applications for the position of Correctional Officer.

Application Process:

Salary Information: $5,139 - $7,306 per month

Benefits Information: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans are available, with premiums fully covered for both employees and dependents. This position is also eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Education: High school diploma or GED
Language: Ability to read and speak English
Qualifications & Desired Attributes:

Meet DPSST physical standards
Have a strong work history and law-abiding behavior
No evidence of substance abuse
Possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
Proficiency in reading comprehension, report writing, and computer use
Pass an ODOC Background Investigation and a psychological evaluation
Position Overview:
The Correctional Officer position is entry-level within the Department of Corrections. Officers provide supervision and security within Oregon's correctional facilities, ensuring safety through observation, interaction, and role modeling appropriate behavior. Duties may include assignments in various areas such as towers, gate control, housing units, and special details.

Responsibilities:
Correctional Officers are responsible for maintaining order and security within the institution. This includes supervising inmates, conducting searches for contraband, enforcing rules, and reporting on inmate conduct. Officers must also be prepared to manage disputes, ensure the safety of all individuals, and monitor facilities for security breaches.

Working Environment:
Correctional Officers work in one of ODOC's 12 state prisons, which house approximately 12,000 adults in custody. The role can involve working in high-security areas, where officers monitor inmates using closed-circuit cameras and other security systems. Officers may need to restrain inmates and escort them to various locations both within and outside the facility.

Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA):
ODOC complies with the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act, which mandates that the department conduct background checks on all applicants considered for employment or promotion. This includes checking for any substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or harassment in correctional or care facility settings.
